What do you miss from the PBA of old?
June 19, 2008 | 10:00AMNow that the ruckus that is the NBA Finals is over (Like Mico, I’m a Laker fan obviously), I can finally go back to my good ol’ Philippine Basketball Association. Not that I didn’t bother following the league standings, nor is it because I never watch any game that doesn’t involve my currently second-to-last place Ginebra. I guess I’m just one of those who miss the PBA of old.
- There aren’t any more Billy Ray Bates or Tony Harris type imports out there. Any time someone gets labeled “Black Superman” or “The Hurricane,” you know that you gotta shell out good money to see that.
- Rivalries just aren’t quite what they used to be. Crispa and Toyota? Heck, I wasn’t even born then, but the heat of their rivalry was felt even during my generation. Am-boy playaz’ talking trash during halftime breaks just isn’t going to cut it.
- Though I hate the guy’s guts, Sonny Jaworski’s antics never failed to amuse fans and haters alike. Not even a sick crossover from either Alapag or Caguioa can generate the same amount of energy from the Big J’s behind the back passes.
I realize that bringing back any of the above is quite difficult. Heck, there isn’t even a formula for any of the successes the oldest pay to play league in Asia has enjoyed in the past. Everything is just a product of how much the game, teams, and players have changed.
If by any chance, anyone from the PBA chances upon this blog, remember this — always listen to what the fans have to say. Commissioners may come and go, and players may retire. Loyal fans however, are always there no matter what.
What’s my opinion? Pit Tubid against Cardona in a boxing match during halftime, and you’ll get your ratings back. Anyone else out there willing to share their thoughts?
*Also, whoever came up with your website deserves to get fired. Really.

i miss samboy lim’s high-flying antics, ronnie magsanoc’s 3 point plays,
ramon fernandez dominating, jawo’s famous elbow trick, hector calma,
rookie season ni paras, 100 points ni tony harris and so on..
yes i agree!
We cannot bring the OLD PBA time that dominates not ony the game but also the airing of the games, but pls be optimistic just help the bleeding basketball organization instead of dishing out bad comments about it.
Help Instead!
btw,current PBA website SUCK’s!
aside from being common and very simple, updates are late. sometimes its better to read an article nlng instead of checking this site!
I think, PBA must institutionalized the Home ang away format just like the NBA. Each team must endorsed or represent by Province or key major cities in the country, let say it compose of 2 conference, the North which is divided in 2 divisions Luzon and GMA, and the Southern Conference which is composed of Visayas and Mindanao this should be done long ago. what to you think?? It will bring back the glory of the PBA isn’t it
la na kwenta now pba… no more passion sa laro ang player… they are playing for the sake of money, unlike before na nakikipagpatayan sa sa bola, today my injury lng sa daliri di na makakalaro ng ilang games,..
actuaaly ganyan ang format the now defunct MBL dati na gustong kumalaban sa PBA..pero hindi rin umubra..merong bago ung “Liga ng Pilipinas” ganyan din ang format…guess who ang LP president…Noel Eala ex-PBa comish…
I miss “ENDING”!! LOL!!! Anybody knows what im talkin about?!
Just say AMEN!! AMEN??
pero i think with bigger company which handles many PBA Teams, they can afford that kind of format. kaysa puro sa manila at minsa may out of town. pero iba parin ang built in home crowd. at sana rin magdagdag pa ng ibang team kasi sayang yung ibang players nabuburo kasi ung mga veterans ang laging may exposure.
pba is still the best league here in the country. mas magagaling nga ang players today..i think pba continue to endorse the legue and ilipat ng chanel, for more endorsement diba!!!sayang kc ung gnda ng pba, kung nasa panget na station.
