God Save Queen Dionisia
November 14, 2009 | 10:28AMGod Save Queen Dionisia:
- I don’t know which was more impressive: the grand welcome Pacman received at the MGM Grand or Aling Dionisia’s colorful arrival at the Las Vegas airport?
- Somehow I suspect there are oversized diamond rings hidden inside those oversized red winter gloves
- And maybe you haven’t received the memo: Aling Dionisia’s new sobriquet is “Mommy D”
- While most celebs in the US run away from TMZ, Mommy D would probably have TMZ guys hang around for dinner
- So forget Aling Dionisia - that prayerful lady, rosary clutched in hand, bereft of style but packed with silent resolve
- Mommy D left Aling Dionisia in Gensan a long time ago
- Dionisia is Hollywood now. She dances, acts, sings. And never forgets to greet her fans
- If Pacman is on the cover of TIME. Mommy D should be on the cover of ROLLING STONE
- Truly, Pacman is a sporting icon and rising global star
- But Queen Dionisia is a cultural phenomenon
- & intriguing topic for a thesis on how boxing, bling and billions transform silent, prayerful ladies from Gensan
- How does one change from Estelle Getty to Fergie faster than a Pacquiao left jab?
- Okay time to get serious for a moment…
- Do I like Aling Dionisia a.k.a. Mommy D?
- It’s convenient to make fun of her clumsy attempts at diva-hood. That’s a knee-jerk response.
- I prefer to dissect Dionisia using a pop-culture microscope
- I am amused by her ostentatious display of Prince Manny’s wealth. I suppose to demand modesty from Mommy D would be akin to demanding modesty from Kanye West. It would be asking for too much. It’s an unfair request. A plea that’s out of place. Aling Dionisia’s meteoric rise from Silent Lady of Gensan to Shopping Queen of Beverly Hills was built on living the life she deserved, not on the time-honored notion of constraint. I dare not fault Mommy D for wanting to live The Good Life. It’s her life. Those are Manny’s millions. God knows what the Pacquiaos had to endure before boxing changed everything. To poke fun at Aling Dionisia today is human. To condemn Mommy D is just downright callous.
- In a strange way, Aling Dionisia’s tale is a success story. Peel away the gaudy get-ups and the blinding jewelry, the albums and the movies, the billboards and tv commercials, you will still find Aling Dionisia. I suspect she still has her stern, silent moments. I also suspect that tucked somewhere inside the mink coat, carefully placed inside the Rodeo Drive dress, is a rosary. The Silent Lady from Gensan is still there. But girls just want to have fun. Mothers just want the world to know their sons have done well.
- And the Queen of Boxing, Mother to Pacman and Pop-Culture Tour de Force of a Nation has my allegiance. Perhaps she deserves yours too.
- All hail Queen Dionisia…because just like Pacman, Dionisia Knows.
